Sheru Announces Home Charging and Power Backup Device for Electric Two-wheeler OEMs https://www.india.com/car-and-bike/sheru-announces-home-charging-and-power-backup-device-for-electric-two-wheeler-oems-6193645/ Fri, 28 Jul 2023 14:19:32 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6193645 New Delhi: Energy solutions company Sheru has announced the launch of EnergyBox, a battery charging dock designed to charge detachable e-2 wheeler batteries. The device is set to provide convenience to electric 2-wheeler users in charging batteries safely at home, as well as in providing power backup for homes. With a number of EV players providing the option of removing the battery from the EV and charging it at home, the need for a device that provides safety and security in this process becomes necessary.

Ebox (EnergyBox) is designed to ensure that users can place the battery in the box and not worry about the charging process. The device is also equipped with the technology to send power back to the home and power appliances, something that Sheru has previously demonstrated at grid scale as well. With time-of-day (ToD) tariffs being rolled out across India, Ebox would help users reduce their electricity bills by powering their homes during higher tariff hours.

“India’s EV journey is markedly different from that of other countries and we need to have tailored solutions to enable this. Our previous technologies such as combining V2G with battery swapping was one such innovation which is being implemented with power utilities. Ebox brings that technology to individual users to safely charge their EV batteries as well as use it to power their homes” said Ankit Mittal, CEO, Sheru.

About Sheru:

Sheru is a leading provider of innovative battery management and energy storage solutions. Their cutting-edge products and services cater to battery manufacturers, financiers, resellers, and distribution companies. Sheru’s expertise in battery management, energy storage, and sustainable mobility is driving the transition towards a cleaner and more efficient future.

Tesla Officials To Meet Union Minister Piyush Goyal To Set Up Factory For Electric Cars Worth Rs 20 Lakh https://www.india.com/business/tesla-officials-to-meet-union-minister-piyush-goyal-build-factory-that-makes-rs-20-lakh-worth-cars-6186423/ Tue, 25 Jul 2023 02:38:53 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6186423 New Delhi: The representatives of Elon Musk-led Tesla will soon meet Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal this month to discuss plans to build a factory to produce what the company has described as an all-new $24,000 car, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The company has been looking for an entry to India, however, the government told the carmaker that there will be no concession given for import taxes. Now, Tesla has expressed an interest in building a factory in India that would produce low-cost electric vehicles (EVs) for the local market and for export, the person said in the Reuters report, adding that the company had indicated that it would be for the new vehicle.

The meeting with the commerce minister would be the highest level discussions between Tesla and the Indian government since June when Elon Musk met India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he intended to make a significant investment in the country.

The 2 million rupee ($24,000) EV Tesla representatives were said to have described in discussions about a potential Indian plant would be 25 per cent cheaper than its current lowest priced offering, the Model 3 sedan which sells for the equivalent of just over $32,200 in China.

The $24,000 target price for the new Tesla vehicle was reported earlier this month by The Times of India newspaper.

Electric vehicles currently account for less than 2 per cent of total vehicle sales in India, now the world’s third largest auto market.

In May, Tesla executives held talks with Indian officials on establishing a manufacturing base for cars and batteries in India.

The meeting with Union Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to centre around setting up an EV supply chain and discussing land allotment for a factory.

Tesla has aggressively discounted its existing models since the start of the year while Musk has repeatedly said its long-term success will hinge on bringing down the cost of EVs sharply.

Tesla has said its next-generation vehicle platform will slash production costs by 50% and that multiple models – including an automated “robotaxi” – could be built from it, without detailing what those future models will be or their pricing.

A Tesla plant under construction in Mexico will produce vehicles on that lower-cost, high-volume platform, which the company has said it said it will take to other factories as well.

Tesla currently produces EVs in California and Texas. Outside North America, it has plants in Berlin and Shanghai.

The Shanghai plant is Tesla’s largest, accounting for almost 40% of the automaker’s global capacity. Plans to add additional capacity there are pending regulatory approval.

Starya Mobility: Bengaluru-Based Startup Helps You Convert Your Existing Scooter Into An EV https://www.india.com/business/starya-mobility-bengaluru-based-startup-which-helps-you-convert-your-existing-scooter-into-an-ev-electric-vehicle-6175038/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 03:42:12 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6175038 New Delhi: Innovation is constantly happening in the dynamic world of electric vehicles (EV). Both new startups and legacy companies are making headlines in the space. Starya Mobility is one such startup that made news in the EV industry.

Starya Mobility recently announced raising $2 million (around Rs 16.4 crore) from Ah! Ventures and Exedy Clutch India and others.

The company was incorporated in July 2018 with a vision to make cutting-edge EV technology affordable to all. “Now that’s a good vision to have but then we need to start somewhere. We need to see what exactly is the market or what is the product and How exactly, at least we can start off?!” CEO Ravikumar Jagannath told Benzinga.

Defining The Product

“What we have developed is India’s most powerful truly indigenized, electric propulsion retrofit kit,” Jagannath said. “It’s a kit that has 6-6.5 kilowatt of power at the peak. The scooter can reach a top speed of almost 85 kilometres per hour and has an acceleration of 0 to 40 in 3.6 seconds and gradeability for almost 17 degrees and mileage of at least 75 to 80 kilometres. So, it is one of the best products that there can be.”

“In the highest mode, the blaze mode – as we call it – you can almost get a torque of 185 Newton meters at the wheel. The highest speed that the system can produce on a flat road with a single rider is almost up to 85 kilometres per hour when the battery voltage is about 51 volts. When it is an eco mode on a flat road with a single rider with speeds below 40 kilometres per hour, we have clocked up to 80 kilometres of mileage”, he told Benzinga.

Starya Mobility holds four patents concerned with different aspects of the technology. The company has also developed an app that helps people keep track of important information about their scooters such as ride history, mileage and power etc.

Hurdles They Faced

Even though the idea put forward by Starya Mobility addresses a major problem, it also poses a lot of questions about the possible challenges in terms of regulations and legalities.

“The most important thing is that our kit has been approved by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). We are India’s only electric propulsion kit that has been approved by ARAI whose kilowatt rating is about four kilowatts,” Jagannath said.

“Our electric propulsion kit has been designed in such a way that technically it can fit into almost any gearless scooter,” he added saying that barring a few vehicles like the old Bajaj Chetak or the Honda Kinetic, almost all scooters are compatible with the product.”

Now apart from the technical compatibility, there is also a legal compatibility that needs to be figured out. “In other words, ARAI has to approve every model that you want to put on the road today.,” Jagannath adds.

“As of today, the company has Honda Activa approved and every three months from today, the company will be getting another scooter approved by ARAI.”

Jagannath also said that the company plans to have approvals for most scooter models including TVS Jupiter, Honda Dio and Suzuki Access within the next 12 to 15 months.

How To Get You Scooter Converted Into An EV

So, how can a customer get their scooter transitioned into an EV through Starya, what would it cost and how does all of that work? Jagnaath explains the two ways people can get this done currently.

“The first way is that you pay Rs 90,000 and you become the complete owner or for a very limited period, maybe for the first 500,000 customers we also have a plan where we say, give me 40% of the money and buy the battery pack and the charger. The propulsion kit, the Bluetooth logger and the app will be on subscription at one rupee per kilometre for the next 50,000 kilometres.”

This way people will end up paying only for the amount of service they use, just like for electricity or a prepaid mobile phone recharge. Once a customer subscribes to the service, they can recharge their scooter through the app with any amount and then travel for that many kilometres. For example, a Rs 30 recharge will let you travel 30 kilometres.

Tesla Cars At Rs 20 Lakh? Elon Musk’s Company May Come To India With Its Own Supply Chain https://www.india.com/business/elon-musk-tesla-production-in-india-domestic-base-supply-chain-available-for-rs-20-lakh-starting-price-6165529/ Fri, 14 Jul 2023 03:02:12 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6165529 New Delhi: American car manufacturing giant Tesla Motors is in talks with the government of India about bringing its own auto parts and electronics supply chain to India, according to a report on the Economic Times. It says the electric car maker is also seeking clarity on incentives and tax breaks.

The Elon Musk-led company is looking forward to establishing its own supply chain ecosystem in India, while the government has asked the company to evaluate the existing auto components supply chain in the country. Even though the discussions are currently at a nascent stage, there is hope for progress, the sources mentioned in the ET report said.

The company has finally initiated talks with the Indian government regarding an investment proposal to establish a car manufacturing plant in India. As per a report on Firstpost, the proposed factory would have the capability to produce up to 500,000 electric vehicles annually, with prices starting at Rs 20 lakh.

Musk-Modi Meet

When Elon Musk met Indian prime minister Narendra Modi last month, the expectations were sky high. Following the meeting, there was a lot of buzz around the launch of Tesla and Starlink in the country. Of course, Musk can’t afford to overlook a big market like India.

While Tesla executives met with Indian officials also inquired about details of possible incentives and tax breaks to the company and its partners for setting up a manufacturing unit in India.

As per a Financial Express report, Tesla had agreed in principle to the Indian government’s proposal to not just assemble its electric vehicles in India, but also to establish a local vendor base.

Tesla officials have also been meeting with Indian industry executives. At a recent meeting of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Tesla said it wants to bring its own suppliers to India, while SIAM emphasised the availability of mature and established auto players in the country. However, Tesla maintained its preference for a completely in-house approach, citing the need for specific quality standards.

The dialogue between Tesla and the Indian government indicates a thawing of tensions between the company and the government. The country had previously rejected Tesla’s demand for import duty cuts, leading to the company shelving its plans for an India debut in 2022. However, the recent meeting between Modi and Musk and the government’s proactive approach has reignited expectations for Tesla’s larger plans for India.

Tata Motors Hikes Prices Of Passenger Vehicles For 3rd Time In 2023 https://www.india.com/car-and-bike/tata-motors-hikes-prices-of-passenger-vehicles-for-3rd-time-in-2023-6145472/ Mon, 03 Jul 2023 06:39:24 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6145472 New Delhi: Indian car maker Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) said on Monday it will increase prices of its passenger vehicles by an average 0.6% across models and variants from July 17.

The price hike is meant to offset the residual impact of past input costs, the company said in a statement.

Tata Motors had announced price hikes of 1.2% in January and 0.6% in April, citing increased input costs and regulatory changes, respectively.

The company’s total expenses for the quarter that ended March 31 climbed nearly 30% from a year earlier on an increase in the cost of materials consumed.

Vehicle prices across segments have increased in India after the government mandated automakers to fit them with a device to monitor emissions, sparking an increase in cost.
